SpilLess team in an oil spill in Peniche, Portugal

A spill of over 3 tonnes of crude oil occurred in Peniche (Portugal) at the beginning of July 2017, which lead to the contamination of a significant fraction of the city’s coastline resulting in the interdiction of two beaches.

SpilLess team was dispatched to the site with the intention of gathering further information about this pollution incident, as well as to collect various samples of contaminated water and sand for analysis. Despite being outside of the initial range of the project, SpilLess intends to work towards the finding of suitable bioremediation technologies that could benefit and assist the cleanup efforts that are already undergoing in Peniche.
